Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation No. 572 voiding the amnesty granted to then military rebel and now senator, Antonio Trillanes. Rodrigo subsequently ordered the arrest of Trillanes, giving instructions for the revival of the rebellion and coup d’état cases against the senator that were dismissed by the courts in 2011. This despite Proclamation No. 75 issued by former President Benigno Aquino III granting amnesty to Trillanes and hundreds of his co-conspirators. With amnesty granted, the courts dismissed the coup d’état cases.
What was the basis of Duterte’s proclamation? Simple. Trillanes’ application for amnesty could not be found. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr. himself, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, acknowledged that there were “lapses” in the handling of the amnesty documents that led to the loss of the former military rebel’s papers. Thus, Duterte insists that his fiercest and staunchest critic never applied for amnesty and admitted his guilt.
Poor Trillanes. He was forgiven, but it appears that such forgiveness has been forgotten by this administration. May truth and justice prevail in this case.
I am glad that our God does not treat us that way. The Bible says:
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. – 1 John 1:9
Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. – Colossians 1:22
For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. – Psalm 103:11-12
And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the Lord. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.” – Jeremiah 31:34
These are only a few Bible verses that affirm the fact that when God forgives a repentant sinner, God will never forget that he has forgiven him or her. I encourage you to read the Bible for yourself for a full picture of God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. If you have already received God’s forgiveness, rejoice in the assurance that God will never un-pardon you. Live a life of gratitude for the amazing forgiveness you have received.
We have a “forgetful” God; that is, when we confess our sins to him, he will never again remember them. Hallelujah!
