I have been following the plan spoken of in the Scriptures where it says, “Those who have never been told about him will see, and those who have never heard of him will understand.” Romans 15:21 NLT
Ambition is not enough. Sometimes, it can even be a problem. Relationships have been broken, lives shattered and careers ruined because of personal ambitions. Not so with the apostle Paul. His example teaches that our lives must be guided by something larger than our ambitions: the eternal plan of God.
Earlier Paul declared, “My ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard” (Romans 15:20). However, Paul did not come up with this ambition on his own. He was “following the plan spoken of in the Scriptures.”
As a faithful Jew, Paul was a zealous student of the Scriptures. As a follower of Christ, his understanding of and commitment to the Scriptures was greater than ever. The Scriptures reveal that God wanted the Good News to be preached to all the peoples of the world. Therefore, Paul lived out his understanding of the plan of God spoken of in the Scriptures. His ambition led him to preach the gospel from Jerusalem, throughout Asia, and all the way to Rome. He regarded it as high honor to be God’s instrument in fulfilling His eternal plan.
Eternal God, as I study your Word, help me learn more about Your plan to reveal Jesus Christ to those who have never heard. Let the Scriptures shape and direct my ambition.
